Bemis® Brings Harmony™ Back To The Home
With Revolutionary Self-Closing Toilet Seat

Latest Innovation Gives Peace Of Mind While Flushing The Concerns Of An Open Toilet

SHEBOYGAN FALLS, Wis. (December 1, 2005) – Bemis Manufacturing Company, the world's leader in toilet seats, is unveiling Harmony, a ground-breaking toilet seat that automatically closes every time the toilet is flushed. Forever changing the bathroom as we know it, women, kids and pets can now all rejoice.

Through years of research and development, Bemis has cracked the code on how to introduce its patented technology through an innovative design that didn't compromise the conventional style of a toilet seat. The secret lies in a discreet cord that's easily attached to the back of a toilet tank, which powers an Easy•Close™ hinge that triggers the seat and cover to close when flushed. Harmony does not utilize electricity or batteries, and is compatible with most residential toilets.

“For many reasons and for as long as anyone can remember, the simple task of closing the toilet seat hasn't been as easy as one may think,” says Melissa Glancey, Product Manager for Bemis Manufacturing Company. “So, since we can't really change human behavior, we thought we'd really change the seat.”

Beyond eliminating the age-old male and female argument of “up verses down,” a recent proprietary study reveals that the new toilet seat technology may help to eliminate a number of more stressful concerns that affect children, pets and overall hygiene. Conducted by one of North America's leading research firms, TNS-NFO, 70 percent of adults reported having at least one major concern that relates to an open toilet seat. In summary, the research specifically revealed some issues that include:

  • Ninety percent of adults with children under two years of age are concerned with children either dropping things in the toilet, or, worse yet, drowning or otherwise hurting themselves
  • More than 75 percent of adults are concerned with their pets drinking from the toilet water that has cleaning agents, which could make them seriously ill
  • Thirty eight percent of adults are concerned that a variety of objects could inadvertently fall into the toilet
  • On a lighter side, 17 percent of adults are concerned someone might inadvertently fall into the toilet bowl when the lid and seat are left open

The research findings also unveiled that the public's advanced understanding of hygiene and germs is leading a trend towards “touchless” technology, which is gaining strong momentum within the bathroom environment. The study reported that 37 percent of men and 40 percent of women want to touch the toilet seat as little as possible.

“Years ago the garage door opener and the TV remote were considered unnecessary luxuries, while today we don't live without them,” Glancey added. “The toilet seat is no different, as we've come to expect increased functionality, convenience and benefits from the products in our homes. Harmony is the natural progression of everyday living in a shared household, whether it's with a partner, kids or just a dog. We truly believe this technology will soon become the new standard for all toilet seats.”

Harmony is constructed of heavyweight polypropylene and features non-corrosive components. It is available in white and in both round and elongated sizes, making it compatible with virtually all toilets. You can find Harmony at The Home Depot® locations across the Midwest, with nationwide availability coming soon.
